The Chinese symbol on the spine means “happiness”, and two symbols together means “double happiness”. The collaged texture is from a marriage license during the Cultural Revolution.
The scarlet letter
The hand-drawn illustration was inspired by woodcut engravings and the time period. The starkness of the cover draws from the novel’s themes of ostracization and loneliness.
